Military Might D-Day Tours FAQ

These are some questions and answers about Military Might D-Day Tours ...

Where do the tours begin?
The tours generally begin from Bayeux or Port-en-Bessin and we are happy to pick up from your accommodation in these area. If you are arriving from Paris on the train we can pick up either at Caen or Bayeux train station. If you are arriving by cruise ship into either Cherbourg or Le Havre we can arrange pick up directly from the ship. Charges do apply for the Caen, Cherbourg and Le Havre pick ups.
What time does the tour begin and end?
Generally we like to meet at 09.00 and finish at 18.00. Times can be arranged to suit but we do like to finish the tours by 6.00pm.
Are there arrangements for lunch?
Lunch is catered for by Ray & Marianne (they live in the local manor which dates from the 12th century and which used to be the local German kommandant's office). They will provide a 10 Euro meal deal of sandwich/demi-baguette with fillings of your choice, with bag of chips (fries), fruit, yogurt, chocolate bar and hot or cold drink. Please note that this is only available in the Utah beach sector, elsewhere a local restaurant will be chosen.
What do I need to bring along for the tour?
Suitable clothing is the most important. Being coastal the weather can be changeable. So some comfortable shoes for walking, a windproof/waterproof and a warm jacket or fleece is recommended. There is room to bring some spare items; these can be left in the vehicles. Please refrain from bringing umbrellas, as it can be windy, waterproof clothing with hoods are more suitable. In the sunshine some sun cream is recommended. Cameras, torches (flashlights!) and binoculars are also useful. Please do not bring pets.
What does the daily charge include
The daily charge includes all transportation from pick-up point to drop-off point and the guide services.
What does the daily charge not include?
The daily charge does not include lunch, snacks, drinks or entry charges to the attractions and museums.
How do we travel on the tours?
Depending on the size of your group we either use our Mercedes Minibuses or 7 seat Mercedes people carriers. These are fully air-conditioned and have seatbelts throughout. Insurance and safety measures are in-line with EU/French regulations. All guides carry mobile telephones.
Is there disabled access to the vehicles?
Currently we do not have chairlifts. Please contact us to discuss your requirements and we will do our very best to accommodate any special needs.
Can children attend the tours?
In the past young children have found the day too long and the subject too difficult to understand properly to be interesting. We recommend children of 12 years upwards but we have had 9 year old children greatly enjoy the 1-day tours. Of course this question greatly depends on the children themselves and you know your children best.
How many people are on the tour?
Our tours are private so it depends on the size of your group. Tours for very large groups are possible; we just need to know your requirements in advance.
How do we pay for a tour?
Secure your place with a 10% deposit, then pay the balance in cash or Travellers Cheques in Euros when you turn up on the day of your tour.
Are the sites mentioned in the tour itineraries on this website the only sites available for us to see?
No, not by any means. The sites given here are the main sites we visit, we also visit many other sites during the tour that are not listed, these are our special ‘out of the way’ places where actual events took place and a comprehensive narrative from your guide will bring these lanes, villages and fields ‘to life’. If you wish to see other sites such as the Falaise Pocket, Hill 112, Tilly, St Lô, Carentan, Cherbourg etc these can be requested when booking a tour.
What knowledge do I need?
You do not need any prior knowledge to enjoy the tours but some prior knowledge is helpful, not essential. There are many books on the subjects we cover and many documentary films. A quick search on Google will bring up many different results and information. Our tours are suitable for all, novice and expert.
Do you do tours in languages other than English?
Currently our tours are in English only.
We are arriving on a cruise-ship. Can we be picked up for a tour whilst we are docked?
Of course, please e-mail us with your request. Ships dock at Cherbourg and Le Havre. There is a surcharge involved which covers our extra fuel costs and road-toll charges.
We are staying in Paris. Can we take a tour?
If you are staying in Paris you can travel to Normandy very easily by train. We would recommend arriving the evening before and staying in the Bayeux area or there are early trains that will leave Paris early to arrive in Caen by 09.00 or Bayeux by 09.30. The journey takes approx 2 hours. There are trains that leave at 7.00pm to get you back to Paris for 9.00pm. We can supply travel information. Please contact us for details.
Do you book hotels or accommodation in the area?
No, but we can supply up-to-date lists of hotels, B & B and gite/cottage accommodation upon request. Bayeux is the best place to stay. We recommend the Kiriad hotel in Carentan.
